So you have a home business and you are going to be working from home. You won’t be able to use the kitchen table for long, ketchup and your laptop is not good together. Setting up in a temporary place is fine for now but you will want to get set up in a more permanent area, it’s not only convenient but it will add to your efficiency by keeping you organized.
What do you need for a home office? Let’s have a look:
Laptop- This is the best choice rather than a desktop. Now that you aren’t tied down to an office or a boss you are mobile. You could work at Starbucks or if you needed to go see relatives for a couple of days you can bring your office with you.
I suggest a laptop with lots of memory and good graphics. I actually have a gaming laptop, I am not a gamer but I wanted something that wouldn’t be sluggish and will be able to handle any graphics I throw at it.
Desk- You really won’t need much space, enough for a computer, printer and a notepad, that’s about it 4’x2′ would be enough but if you want bigger go bigger.
Printer- believe it or not you will need a printer. There are things you will want to print off such as a schedule (see a productivity post) or notes you make. There are a million varieties out there so I won’t get specific on which one to get.
Make Sure You Are Comfortable
Chair-You will be sitting down for a large portion of your work day, trust me you need a good quality chair. Get one that is adjustable. Your feet should be flat on the floor and legs at 90 degrees. Ideally, the top of your laptop screen should be at eye level. This is to prevent neck strain. You may find that you are more productive when you stand at your desk. If so you will need a desk that can handle that style too.
Light- Might be a good idea to have a light on your desk, it will help to prevent eye strain.
Pens, paper, calculator and post-it notes– a variety of these will be necessary. a highlighter may be handy too.
Laptop bag- An attaché case, backpack or laptop bag will allow you to be mobile and ready to work anywhere.
Freedom to work wherever you want
Depending on the success of your business you can work anywhere you have an internet connection. If you will be travelling a lot perhaps an air card (plugs into the USB port and connects you to the internet) would be a good idea.
Working at home will give you an incredible amount of freedom. With a few supplies, you can be very successful.
