What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing has been around for many years. When the 1990’s saw the internet become available to more people around the world an opportunity for businesses to make more money was found as well.  Affiliate marketing is a way for an advertiser like Indigo, Staples, and online stores to market their product for a relatively cheap cost. There are three parties involved:

The advertiser is any company that has a website online that wishes to sell their products. Such as insurance, movies, airlines, anything and everything.

The publisher is an individual with a blog or website that wants to promote the advertisers products for a percentage of the sale price. Some pay out high percentages and others are lower.  Amazon, for example, pays a relatively low percentage but they have a selection of over 480 million products and are adding more each day. The publisher advertises: using articles about the product then places a link in the article to the advertiser’s website.

  • using articles about the product then places a link in the article to the advertiser’s website. (product review)
  • banners in the sidebar.
  • or write about a topic you are familiar with and place a related advertisement within your text.

A consumer is a person who sees an advertisement and clicks on it to buy the product. The publisher would then get a percentage of that sale.

When you multiply that by the billions of people online there is an opportunity for money to be made. No brick and mortar store, or waiting for the customer to come to you during business hours and no need to spend a small fortune on advertising.

So…how does this fit together?

Let’s say you want to buy a Ghostbusters DVD but you want the convenience of having it shipped to your address. You would type in the phrase “Ghostbusters DVD” into Google, Bing, or another search engine, and various websites will pop up with that information. The publisher who wrote the article has used a keyword research tool and discovered how many people have searched the phrase “Ghostbusters DVD.” If the publisher’s article is well-written and helpful it could be on the first page of results listed on a Google search.
